If you glamour things directly, there's less up-front management, but it does cost a glamour prism each time. It consumes one glamour prism to put something in there, but once it's in there, you can use it in as many plates as you like (up to the max of 10), and apply those plates freely without spending any more prisms. The Glamour Dresser, in the inn room, will hold up to 200 items. There are two ways to change the appearance of an item - using a Glamour Prism on it directly, or using Glamour Plates, which you can create at a wardrobe in any inn room (or in your squadron management chamber, if that's more convenient to you). Find pieces you like the look of and then figure out where to get them - r/ffxivglamours isn't super active but is a good first place to look. Some of them come from the Mog Station, some are crafted, some are dropped. So there are some items that are specifically glamour items, which are, like you describe, level 1 and not class-restricted.
